No surprises here. Either you're a Pokémon fan or you're not.
Frankly, this anime adaption is pretty faithful to the Pokémon franchise - meeting Professor Oak, saying hi to your Mom, getting counter-picked and having your first battle with your rival, and so and on so forth - the standard, formulaic Pokémon model.
To be honest, I always picked Squirtle so I can't really sympathize with the difficulty Red faces in his gym battle. What can I say? Water gun OP. Viridain Forest, on the other hand ... what a pain in the ass. ``
The gym battle Red had was pretty unbelievable ... everyone knows String Shot is more useless than toilet paper. Since when was
Metapod this strong...? Somehow Red pulled an
Ewok and took down an Onyx with string... At this rate, it won't be surprising if we see a lvl. 100 Magikarp as final boss, splashing its way to victory.
Overall, I don't have very high expectations for this show. If you're looking to sate a Pokémon fix, go (re)watch a
Pokémon movie. Only recommended for die-hard (and rather bored) Pokémon fans looking for nostalgia.
